Hajj Lessons

Cow and Lamb Cakes
Hajj Lapbook

One of the things I love most about homeschooling is being able to customize our learning. We can pick and choose any topic and turn it into a unit study. Every year, ever since my oldest was in KG, we have dedicated 2 weeks to learning about Hajj.

During this period we read and discuss the story of Ibrahim (pbuh), Prophet Ibraheem's journey from Babylon to Makkah, the geographical location of the Holy cities: climate, habitats, etc., and scientific facts surrounding those areas. This turns into quite an exciting unit study.

Hajj Notebook

When my son was in the second grade I created a Hajj Journal for him to document what goes on during each day of the Hajj. I have included the Hajj journal for anyone to download and here is how to use it:

Download the Hajj Notebook here FREE.

It's full of fun and educational activities, including vocabulary words.

1. Each day log onto www.makkahlive.net and watch the live streaming of the pilgrimage.

2. Read about what the pilgrims will be doing that day. For example: "Today the pilgrims have left Mina and are travelling to Arafah. The leave after Fajr, some will travel by bus, some by car, and many will walk. In Arafah they will make dua to Allah for anything and everything..."

3. Have your child imagine he/she is a pilgrim and have them jot down what they are doing and their feelings.

Books to read:

  1. The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (Learning Roots)
  2. Zaahir & Jamel: Hajj (Goodword Books)
  3. Visit to the Kaaba by: Mennah I. Bakkar (Little Moslems)
  4. Tell Me About Hajj by: Saniyasnain Khan (Goodword Books)
  5. When the Moon Split by: Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri (read the portion regarding the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) Hajj.
For older children:
  1. Tafsir of Surah Al-Hajj
  2. Stories of the Prophets, chapter on Prophet Ibrahim (as) (Ibn Kathir)
  3. Lives of the Prophets by: Sheikh Muhammad Dali Balta, Translated by: Dr. Muhammad Badawi
  4. When the Moon Split by: Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri

Hajj Simulation

Gather a group of homeschoolers and create a Hajj simulation. For years the Muslim Homeschool Network of Southern California had a Hajj simulation and it was so exciting for the kids. We had religious teachers from the community lead the kids through their journey. The children would dress in Ihram, start on a simulated plane ride, get their hajj passports stamped, and take part in all the rights of hajj, including the cutting of lamb cakes.

Projects and activities we have also done in the past:
